Penguatan Literasi Melalui Pembelajaran Berbasis Cerita Rakyat di SD YPK Toray

Literacy skills are a crucial foundation for developing high-quality human resources, especially in 3T regions (disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost), such as SD YPK Toray in Sota District, Merauke Regency, South Papua. This article explores efforts to strengthen students’ literacy through a local folklore-based learning approach as a contextual strategy that integrates educational activities with local cultural values. The program was implemented through six main stages: participatory learning, folklore introduction workshops, interactive learning, creative expression activities, community involvement, and evaluation and reflection. The results show significant improvements in students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, along with a stronger sense of pride in their cultural identity. Folklore-based learning has proven effective not only in enhancing literacy skills but also in instilling noble values and reinforcing the cultural identity of Papuan children. This program contributes to culturally responsive and inclusive education in remote areas.
