Abstract

Tifa is a traditional musical instrument that holds significant cultural and social value in the lives of Papuan communities. However, social change, the growing influence of modern music, and the declining transmission of cultural knowledge across generations have contributed to decreasing knowledge and skills related to Tifa among younger generations. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge, awareness, and skills of young people in Onggaya Village in preserving Tifa as a local cultural heritage. The program was implemented through several stages, including needs identification, education on the cultural values and functions of Tifa, demonstrations, hands-on Tifa playing practice, discussions, and program evaluation. Young participants were actively engaged in the learning process, with community figures and local cultural practitioners involved as sources of indigenous cultural knowledge. The results indicated improvements in participants’ understanding of the cultural significance of Tifa, their basic skills in playing the instrument, and their awareness of the importance of transmitting cultural knowledge to future generations. These findings demonstrate that participatory empowerment and intergenerational knowledge transmission can serve as effective strategies for revitalizing Tifa traditions and strengthening the role of youth as successors of cultural heritage in Onggaya Village.
